Leaders are by birth or they are developed is a question on which many discussions have been made. The answer to this is that they both exist. Some leaders are born and some are made. From this we can say that leadership depends on the situation.

There are so many theories about leadership, according to:

  • Great Man Theory: leaders are born and cannot be made. A person who leads naturally has the qualities of becoming a leader. This theory says that whenever there is an urgent need of some to lead then a leader arises.
  • Trait theory: The Trait theory accepts that people become good leaders by the qualities they inherit. It is much more like the Great Man Theory.
  • Behavioral theory: this theory describes a different concept that leaders are made not born. This theory focus on the mental qualities it believes that people can become leaders by learning and observation.

In my point of view leaders are born is a myth. None of us have ever seen a baby with a tittle of leader on his birth. So no one is a leader by birth, it is the environment circumstances that make a man a leader.

Leadership is not a formula or a program it is a human activity that comes from heart and considers the heart. Great leadership is about human experiences.

Leadership begins with learning to and controls oneself first. Then, and only then, we can lead and enable others.

The ability to lead lies within us all.
Struggle makes a man a Leader.

Leaders are developed

According to behavioral theory of leadership, great leaders are made, not born. According to this people can learn to become a leader by experiences and observation.it is the most widely accepted theory today. A leading leadership researcher Wareen Bennis believes that one can become a leader by his experiences in his life but one cannot be forced to learn leadership. The research of Dr. Carol supports this concept. People with a growth mindset believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work. This view creates a love of learning. On the other side, in fixed mindset, people spend their time on their basic qualities like intelligence or talent rather than focusing on the development of other qualities.

All the description of this topic can be summarized by these lines by Powell (Former Secretary of States, United States):

Effective leaders are made, not born. They learn from trial and error, and from experience. When something fails, a true leader learns from the experience and puts it behind him.
